About the Role
The Collections Officer assists in the effective collection of overdue accounts in accordance with the Workers’ Compensation Act of Nova Scotia. This includes reviewing of overdue accounts, working with Legal on complex accounts receivable to determine if judgments should be issued, ensuring all options are exercised, preparing judgment documents and renewals, determining if an account is a successor to another account, coordinating account write-offs, preparing correspondence for receiverships, tax sales and foreclosures, liaising with court administration office, land registration office, law firms and municipalities, responding to general and complex questions verbally and in writing, preparing monthly accounts receivable reporting to Financial Services as well as preparing quarterly accounts receivable reporting and analysis to Financial Services and entering into reasonable payment arrangements and allocating funds for judgment accounts.
The Collections Officer collects overdue accounts receivable generated through the assessment of Nova Scotia employers, as well as providing explanations of the impact of claims history (experience rating) on the employers’ assessment; processing regular assessment adjustments, suspending closed accounts, reviewing and; assisting in the full range of collection procedures.
This position is responsible to respond to employer and lawyer enquiries by phone, in writing and in person. They must provide a high degree of professionalism, judgement and tact, negotiating receipt of payment for overdue accounts.
Employees at this level are responsible for following safe work procedures; using personal protective and safety equipment as required; knowing and complying with all regulations; reporting any illness or injury immediately to the manager; reporting unsafe acts and unsafe conditions; and cooperating with occupational health and safety initiatives. Employees have access to sensitive and/or confidential information provided by the Canada Revenue Agency for the purpose of carrying out the duties of this position. Therefore, a satisfactory security check is a requirement for this role. A security check consists of a confidential criminal record check conducted through the Human Resources department. Renewal of the security check is required every ten years. An offer of employment is conditional upon obtaining a satisfactory security check.
Your Experience & Skills
A two (2) year business administration diploma in Accounting or Finance, plus three (3) years’ experience providing administrative support, including data entry and processing in an accounting or financial environment.
Working knowledge of collections, preferably in a federal or provincially legislated environment with a demonstrated ability to apply law, policies and procedures relevant to
collections is considered an asset.
