​About the Role

Reporting to the Director, Risk & Financial Transactions, the Manager of Risk is responsible for ensuring the effectiveness and efficiency of risk management practices and fostering a risk aware culture through collaborating with staff and leadership across departments of the Worker’s Compensation Board (WCBNS) to support the organization in achieving strategic objectives. This role will oversee the timeliness and quality of the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) program, it’s deliverables and coordinate with internal audit.  

 

This position leads a team of 1 direct report.

  • Monitors performance of all aspects of the Team’s goals to result in favorable improvement and leads ongoing change to enable continuous improvement and service excellence.

  • Provides timely, constructive feedback to staff and manages performance concerns.
  • Manages and develops the work environment to develop the team and maximize their full potential as individuals and as a team.

  • Collaborates with leaders within the division and across the organization to plan and advance opportunities. 
  • Positively leads change and encourages innovation when delivering service.
  • Lead the team in conducting department risk assessments
    • Facilitate discussions with Management to identify and update department risk profiles, accurately documenting risks (current and emerging) and mitigations
    • Facilitate discussions with Management to assess residual risk
    • Ensure assessment of mitigation effectiveness is appropriate
    • Communicate recommendations to enhance risk mitigation and/or operational efficiency 

Your Experience & Skills

  1. A university degree in business, accounting, finance or a related discipline.
  2. Minimum of 5 years experience in risk management, audit, finance, insurance, and/or public practice risk advisory/consulting role with 3 years experience in a supervisory capacity or leading projects. 
  3. A relevant professional accounting, audit, and/or risk management designation (e.g. Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certification in Risk Management Assurance (CRMA)).
  4. Strong understanding of risk management principles, methodologies, and best practices.
  5. Ability to analyze complex information, identify trends, and evaluate potential impacts to various risks.
  6. Ability to integrate risk management with the organization’s strategic plan objectives.
  7. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence and educate stakeholders across all levels of the organization.  

(Note: an equivalent combination of a university degree in another area of study and significant additional experience in risk management may be considered.)

Occasional travel is required for this position.

Employees have access to sensitive and/or confidential information provided by the Canada Revenue Agency for the purpose of carrying out the duties of this position.  Therefore, a satisfactory security check is a requirement for this role. A security check consists of a confidential criminal record check conducted through the Human Resources department.  Renewal of the security check is required every ten years.  An offer of employment is conditional upon obtaining a satisfactory security check.
